"The second-best climate in the world" — National Geographic. Most expats who visit Lake Chapala to look around end up staying longer than they planned.
Lake Chapala is Mexico's largest freshwater lake, cradled between mountains in Jalisco, about 45 minutes south of Guadalajara. It is home to the largest concentration of North American expats in Latin America — drawn by the climate, the cost of living, and a community that has been welcoming outsiders for decades.
The climate is legendary: warm enough to swim in March, cool enough to sleep without AC in August. At 5,100 feet of altitude with the latitude of Hawaii, air conditioning and heating are largely unnecessary. Couples comfortably live on $2,000–$2,500 USD per month including rent, food, and entertainment.
The lakeside communities each have their own character — Ajijic's cobblestone streets and art galleries, Chapala's wide malecón and local feel, Riberas' quiet residential blocks, La Floresta's parks and schools. Finding your town is part of finding your home.
“Most people come for a week to look around. They leave three years later.”
Eternal spring climate
74°F average year-round. The altitude of Denver meets the latitude of Hawaii — no AC, no heating bills.
Largest expat community
20,000+ permanent residents from the US and Canada. English is widely spoken across all services.
World-class healthcare
Guadalajara — 45 minutes away — has top-tier hospitals. Local clinics and specialists serve the lakeside area.
Affordable living
Couples live comfortably on $2,000–$2,500 USD/month including rent, food, and entertainment.
Easy to reach
Direct flights to Guadalajara from Houston, Dallas, Chicago, LA, and more. 45 min drive to the lake.
Art & culture
Ajijic has been an artists' colony for decades. Galleries, festivals, and the Lake Chapala Society's 60+ weekly activities.

Not yet. RentaLakeChapala is a marketplace that connects renters and listers. All bookings and payments are arranged directly between both parties.
RentaLakeChapala is a neutral listing platform — we connect renters and property listers but we do not own, manage, promote, verify, or endorse any listing. We are not a party to any rental agreement and accept no responsibility for the accuracy of listing information, the condition of properties, or any disputes that may arise between renters and listers. All transactions, agreements, and communications are solely between the renter and the lister. Use your own judgment and due diligence before committing to any rental.
The Rental Requests board lets renters post rental requests publicly. You describe when you're arriving, how long you're staying, your budget, and your preferred towns. Listers browse the board and reach out directly if they have something that fits — your contact details stay private and are only shared when a lister responds.
Create a free renter account (choose 'Find a rental' at signup), then go to the Rental Requests board and fill out the short request form. Your request stays active for 7 days — you'll get an email each time a lister responds. You can close your request early once you've found your place.
Visit the Rental Requests board (also linked from your dashboard under Broadcasts). Browse active requests and click 'I have a match' on any that fit your listing. Select the listing to share, and the renter will receive an email with the link and your contact details. You can also manage notification settings from your dashboard.
Post your listing in 2 minutes — free to start, no commission. Reach the expats and snowbirds already looking.
